No you can't. It's hard for us to understand many times that other's don't get what we go through every day. My hubby's one of them. I get so upset with him when I'm HIGH or LOW b/c I pretty much hear the samething that your PE teacher said. He has both heart trouble and sever herinated disk and I have told him I don't know what he's talking about b/c I have neither so he DON'T need to tell me about my diabetes! I know the sircumstances are different here but it comes down to pretty much the samething. I KNOW HOW I FEEL YOU DON"T!

That is a totally lame comment by the teacher. Totally unconstructive and horrible from someone who is getting ****paid**** to teach diverse people. I would seriously file some kind of complaint with the school board and work on getting her fired or reprimanded. I would also start training evey morning to get to where I could kick her butt off the track. I sort of get carried away doing stuff to prove to myself that I'm tough but pulling over and walking is totally a no-brainer if you are crashing. The group I've been training for the marathon with is sort of mixed between people who are "I don't walk or stop...***ever***" and people who are way more laid back. I don't have any problem pulling over to test or get more water or whatever. A lot of times the "fast" people in our pace group will run ahead when I stop but I can usually catch them a bit down the road. The running books I've read ***all*** endorse run/walking as a better training method to build distance and stamina too, including several by Jeff Galloway who ran a 2:12 marathon (26.2 miles, that's very fast!!) and has a strong running CV. Maybe he has information on the internet you could show her about that and she clearly also needs some education about diabetes.

What time do you have PE, did you have some on-board insulin firing away? That can make a huge difference for me. I'll sometimes "correct" a 143 if it's at the start of a run, but cut it to like 1/3 of the normal CB so it ends up not being very much insulin. Another thing that you could perhaps do to freak the teacher out is sprint to jack up your BG? If you sprint, it pumps out hormones, sort of like Dawn Phenomenon or something like that. One of the first times I set out to run 8 miles, I was sort of meandering along, 2 miles into it and didn't feel too sharp, tested and was 39! Eeek!! I am always squeezing those runs in on weekends and didn't want to give up so I had some Smarties and just let 'er rip, sprinting as fast as I could (remember, this is a 42 year old in spandex pants as it was cold out...quite a spectacle!) for like a block and a half to tap into the adrenaline. A mile or so later my BG had climbed back to 85 or so so I think it helped? It's probably hard as my daughter is 12 and some days PE is like "we played badminton" which doesn't sound all that strenuous and other days they are run all over the place. I would recommend developing a plan to get the teacher. Both formally through channels and also by doing some extra work on the weekends so you can shut her the hell up. I hope that you talk to your parents about this. You seem pretty sharp and ought to be able to figure out a way to do it and I hope that you get to the point where you can run the teacher into the ground sooner, rather than later. And, ideally, that your friends will get a video of it that we can all share and make rude comments about her on? heh heh heh heh..(MrsAcidRock and daughter are watching Beavis and Butthead on the VMAs...). Go get 'er!!

You really need to get your parents on her case. I don't care what you do -- LOWS HAPPEN!! And more than once in your life! Your parents need to educate this "teacher" on the realities of life with diabetes, especially the fact that exercise can affect you unpredictably, and that you're mature enough to be honest about what's happening in YOUR body. She has exactly NO right to comment on, or do anything that would risk your health or your life, and not taking a low seriously could do exactly that. Have your parents make sure that it's in writing in your 504 plan: if you say you're low, then it's to be taken seriously, and there should always be someone available who knows what to do in that case. In this case, the PE teacher should have been prepared to take care of you -- know where your glucose tablets were, watch you in case you pass out, and be prepared to call 911 if you do. And NOT make a smart-ass remark! Can you tell I'm pissed for your sake?

ARRGH! What an incredibly ignorant, insensitive & cruel remark. It's not an excuse, but a fact of life we struggle against daily. Am really sorry this woman hurt you. Agree that your parents should file a complaint. This is serious & she'll no doubt treat another diabetic student in the future the same. Hold your head high, baby!

Get your parents to ask to see the principal and the school nurse, along with this teacher . You need to have a 504 plan that will legally mandate that nyou be allowed times to treat low blood glucoses. This plan and its accomodations MUST be put in writing. You need to get documentations from myour doctor and/or health care team.., The more papers the better. Be "nice", and not threatening but be thorough. A Phone call will not do, contact your local JDRF or ADA for help.. You can find the numbers online. This is NOT acceptable and will only get worse if it is allowed to continue throughout this school year.

That was really a mean thing to stay and I would tell your parents and have them tell the school. Just remeber you know when you blood sugar is low your PE teacher doesnt. One time when I was at PE I asked if i could check my blood sugar and he said we are almost done with class wait until we switch and I told him no I cant wait I need to check my blood sugar. Once I said that sure enough he said ok go ahead. I dont know what you said back to you PE coach, but if it happens again stand up for yourself and dont let her say that. Its not your fault you go low. Its not any diabetics fault that we get low blood sugars.

AR, I stand corrected! :-) But, having been a teacher, I KNOW students' rights, and this one violated them badly. Teachers have to KNOW, first off (and Anna DID tell her), and then they are obligated by law to respond appropriately. GRRRRRR!

Hmm... One thing I've always disliked about teaching has been trying to deal with other teachers who refuse to make accomodations. I have seen this happen to students with asthma, OCD, Autism etc. I have never heard of a teacher doing this to a student with diabetes. Health and Safety is now a main focus in education so I'm almost certain that most other teachers and/or the administration would support you.

I agree with the others. First try to talk to the PE teacher and let him know what could happen if you did go low. If he doesn't respond appropriately, I would go to a trusted teacher or the administration. Sadly, you might even need to get your parents involved. I'm sure that you are not the only student to be treated like this by this particular teacher. He needs to know that his behaviour IS NOT OKAY!

i told the assistent princable and my parents. The day she said that to me i was crying cuz its bad enough being teased by kids.... luckly i have one really good friend who knows what happend and told me he was going to talk to the princable for me
