I went to the dr. for the results of my blood test to find my A1C had risen from 6.0 to 6.5 and that I have high cholesterol. I also am low on calcium and potassium. The cholesterol problem is probably related to having high fat dairy as per the Bernstein diet, I guess it is just not for elderly diabetics. Or maybe just some diabetics. Very disappointing result as I have been trying very hard to be good with the low carb stuff. The other thing that has been upsetting me is that I am putting on weight, so I guess I kind of knew something was wrong.

So sorry to hear this. Not the results people typically have. Everyone I know following low carb & Dr. B loses weight & has improved BG & lipids My lipid panel is far better on a high fat diet. How many carbs & how much protein are you eating? High protein adds weight. Really disappointing.

Did your doctor raise your med dose? Unfortunately, diet isn't always enough to tame BG. As a T2, insulin resistance causes the vicious cycle of weight gain from high insulin levels & this also effects blood lipids. So, it may not be as much of a low carb failure as you think. When oral meds fail to bring control, more T2s use insulin to get BG in range. There's also the issue of people being diagnosed incorrectly based on age, so their treatment plan is ineffective.

Sorry, when your blood sugar control degrades, you will start to have metabolic problems and your cholesterol may well rise (alot). I've always felt the first order of business is to get your blood sugar controlled. Doctors will tell you that your major risk is cholesterol, but that is just not true. Even the most extreme levels of cholesterol don't increase your health risk much, but an A1c of 6% results in double the risk of heart problems over non-diabetic levels.

The fact that you are putting on weight and have degraded blood sugar control suggests that it is unlikely that you were eating too few carbs. What kind of low carb diet are you following?

This might help or it might not. I am not Doctor, I don't even have health insurance to know my own labs, but I am a fellow Type 1 Diabetic who follows DR. B. How long have you been on DR. Bernstein? What were your labs like before the diet? I have been on his diet for 1 year now. It has been challenging at times. In the beginning I would be really hungry, so I would eat more protein, more fat . About 7 months into the diet I was scared that maybe it was to much protein/fat and something bad would happen. So, I started to back off a little on the protein and fat and ad more raw veggies into my diet. It worked! No more hunger! I can easily go 5-7 hours in-between meals. I feel healthier and am not worried about my labs. I know my sugars are better at times because my monitor shows me. I still have a terrible time figuring out my insulin, especially long lasting. For some people it is easy to figure out on their own, but for me its like learning Vietnamese. I do hope you can find a way to stay on the diet by making some adjustments? I can't help but feel it really does work, of course I am biased, and am judging only by the way I feel today vs, last year before starting the diet.

PastelPainter, I have had a similar problem, and never cheat on the carbs. Bernstein had an immediate dramatic effect on my blood sugars, and my lipid panel was OK, although not spectacularly so. My cheese consumption went up over time as it had no effect on my blood sugar and is very satisfying. Then the weight started to slowly but steadily pile on until I had gained 50 lbs. This was not supposed to happen. I read about people who go low carb and the pounds just melt away. In addition my triglycerides went up significantly. My Insulin resistance also increased due to weight gain and my blood sugar numbers started to deteriorate again presumably due to increased insulin resistance.

Here's my theory, which is not original to me. Dairy has compounds that cause a release of insulin. This extra insulin ultimately resulted in fat deposition which increased insulin resistance and on and on. The standard treatment for high triglycerides is to cut carbs because excess insulin causes triglycerides to rise, but my carbs are already low, with no fast acting carbs at all.

So I am slowly weaning myself of dairy, the ultimate goal is to eliminate it completely. So I will become a Paleo-Bernstein I guess.Too soon to tell if it will work but I have lost a couple of pounds since I started. I plan to eliminate all dairy over the next couple of weeks.

T2 is a complicated disease, different people have different defects in their metabolism which lead to a T2 diagnosis, so the fact that in my case my body reacted in this way does not really surprise me.

This is disappointing for you . Had you continued with daily exercise ? What is your next plan of action ? And please don't give up !

I think, as Bad Moon suggests it is the high fat dairy that has been my problem and since I can't stand low fat dairy stuff I guess I will eliminate it slowly from my diet. My dr. is pleased with 6.5 saying anything between 5 and 7 is good, but I think my result is far too close to a 7 for comfort! I have actually increased my exercise, so that should not be the problem. I think I will go back to following The Type 2 Diabetes Diet Book by Calvin Ezrin and Robert E Kowalski, their low fat, low carb diet lost me a lot of weight, then I switched to a more Bernstein based diet and it did not suit my ageing body. I have found the Dukan Diet recipe book has a lot of good low carb, low fat recipes, so although I do not intend to follow the Dukan diet I may have a tastier solution than that offered by most low fat, low carb recipe books.

Very many thanks for your help and suggestions. I will do my best to get my blood sugars further under control and still keep low carbing whilst cutting back on the dairy. Incidentally, BadMoon, how do you keep your calcium levels up whilst decreasing dairy consumption? That is my biggest worry.

Some Bernstein friendly non dairy sources of calcium. Canned salmon eaten with bones, shrimp, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, sprouts, seaweed, almonds, walnuts, sesame butter.

You may consider a more all natural / plant based approached to eating (placing the dominance of your diet on the aforementioned being as close to exclusive as you feel comfortable whether that starts at 80, 90 or 100 percent). Diets such as the one you mentioned like Bernstein are peculiar and possibly a little bit too narrowly focused on each foods potential to raise blood sugar i.e., in that they have lists that completely eliminate fantastic plants, vegetables, fruits and other natural goodies more etc. at any quantity but yet allow for essentially artificial and processed garbage such as the puddings, jellos and sodas (that only potentially damage you rather than benefit you). Additionally, green veggies (calorie for calorie kale and brocoli much more so than milk) are loaded with calcium so much so that countries that have placed a priority on the greens and not dairy neither have the kidney disease, osteoporosis, of hip fractures that we see here in the US. GL.

My cholesterol unexpectedly went up (a few years ago) and I was putting on weight (beyond easily) and for me, it was a thyroid problem--it wasn't related to my low carb diet at all. Both can be symptoms of hypothyroid. Other symptoms are fatigue, hair falling out, and muscle aches. I'd suggest you get your thyroid checked. Of course it could be other things causing the symptoms. But I highly doubt it's from eating low-carb, unless your body is some rare anomaly.
