Dr. Oz says do not drink water with meals. I thought that was interesting.

Hi SEAGATOR,

You know, I've actually heard that too but I don't think it was from Dr. Oz. What did he say? I seem to remember hearing something about it affecting digestion but I'm not 100% sure..

I slept through the night - two nights in a row so I did not drink water in the night. I can't help but think that lack of routine hydration caused my morning BS to be higher for the last 2 mornings.

Hi DeniseC,

You could try drinking a glass or two of water before bed just to see if it affects your morning readings, however water might not be the solution in this case. I've heard from a number of people who have experienced similar morning results and they attribute the cause to something called the "dawn phenomenon." The dawn phenomenon is said to most commonly occur between 3 and 5 am (after which blood sugars normally rise). The cause of rising blood sugars after this time is attributed to the body's release of certain counter-regulatory hormones that force the liver to release stored glucose. Why would your body need to do this? Well, throughout the night when you are sleeping your blood sugar slowly drops. In fact, many say it drops so much that your body goes hypoglycemic. So in actuality, the liver's release of stored glucose during the night is a tactic used by your body to prevent hypoglycemia.

To check whether or not this is happening in your case you should try testing your blood sugar level at some point during the night to see if your numbers are in fact dropping. If that's the case, a few extra carbs before bed might be the solution to help stabilize glucose levels throughout the night. Some suggest eating a protein instead, while studies conducted have also found vinegar tablets to work.

I hope this helped and gets you the results you're looking for :)
