Nutritional Tip #3: Regulate Your Eating Habits

Establishing a healthy, balanced diet is one of the key factors for achieving successful Diabetes management. In fact, just doing that alone would put a smile on the face of any Diabetic’s dietician. However, that smile certainly wouldn’t last long if you revealed that you have irregular eating habits because for Diabetics, when you eat is just as important as what you eat. By establishing... All those snacks--no way for me. 30 carbs/day, mostly from vegies works for me.

Hi Judith! I've quickly realized that many people assume the term "snack" to mean something unhealthy and carb-filled. This doesn't have to be the case! Vegetables make a great snack and contain little to no carbohydrate content. For instance, instead of eating a common snack like chips, Diabetics can try eating something that eats like a chip - examples of these include celery, broccoli and cucumbers. Other choices like tomatoes and carrots eat like a chip, but have a higher sugar content then other vegetable alternatives.

I don't assume snacks need to be unhealthy foods, but on some level, a carb is a carb and for me (T2, diet and exercise only) there is no such thing as a free carb. I pretty much stick to Bernstein's 6-12-12 plan and feel no need at all for a snack of any kind. In fact my breakfast is usually about 4 carbs followed by a mile walk---that is when I am most insulin resistant. My main meal of the day is usually lunch......."If you want to treat diabetics by the book, you need to write a new book for every diabetic"........

Based on what I've read about the Berstein diet and its 6-12-12 method, you consume about 800-900 calories per day. As a 61-year-old female, this diet may work for you which is great! I on the other hand am a 23-year-old male (T1, insulin, diet and exercise) weighing ~200lbs, not to mention a former football player with less than 10% body fat. If I were to consume 800-900 calories per day, especially during the course of a football season, I would melt away to nothing and probably not have enough energy to complete a single practice. Right now I feel like we're comparing apples to oranges.....

I eat 1300 calories/day---no apples, no oranges as they spike me--LOL.....But that's the point, really. One can't make one-size-fits-all-rules..........

Lol.. I apologize for the confusion as that was not my intention at all. My suggestions are not meant to be one-size fits-all-rules, rather I hoped they would serve as loose guidelines/tips/at the very least "something to try" when things aren't going the way you've initially planned. I'll make sure to do a better job of clarifying in the future :)

PS I enjoyed your apples and oranges comment - I actually did LOL
