QUITTER - 1 SOLID month... and name to come = LOSER : )

Hi!
Can you believe it's been one month today. Dec. 18, 2008 - Jan. 18, 2009. I have NOT smoked. Today I had to go to LaGuardia to get my mom at the airport (see my blog...EDONAdesigns.blogspot.com...the pipes burst at mom and dad's house!) and as I sat at the airport with my daughter we watched about 15 people smoke outside the door. I didn't want one. I didn't want to get out of the car and smoke. Now, that was HUGE! Me, not dying for a cigarette. I still can't believe it.

AND... new name to come is going to be LOSER. Geez, never thought I'd be proud to wear such "funny" and relatively negative names: QUITTER and LOSER, but they have such positive conotations for me! I'm now on BL-DS (Biggest Losers - Diabetes Style) with a number of other TuD folks. I started exercising three days ago. Yes, I own a thing called a treadmill. Now, for the past 5 years I just thought it was a great clothes hamper, but my husband showed me how to turn it on and wow! The burn in my legs. I've done 30 minutes / 1.5 miles per day for the past 3 days. So, GOAL (as mentioned in my last TuD blog) is to lose 20 pounds by the time I turn 40 on Aug.21. I'm going to do this! Of course, I'm now thinking that 30 pounds sounds better!

I love that!

Erin---a P.S.---I also read about a study of motel/hotel cleaning women---those who thought of their work as exercise lost weight, those who didn't, didn't. So when I vacuum or the like, I put on Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions or my favorite Vivaldi and tell myself it's exercise! Isn't that interesting?

You guys are all SO thoughtful and I can't thank everyone for their support!
I have been varying the exercising. I've done "weight loss" where it varies the speed, "weight loss" where it varies the incline and manual which was the firs two nights... slow and steady. Tonight I'm going to try "rolling" and see what that does. Luckily I'm not totally out of shape even though I've smoked for 24 years. I've always stayed relatively active. But, the burn feels good. Who remembers the old posters with half-clothed men that said "No Pain, No Gain"? I had one of those posters and I keep saying it over and over as I walk.

Judith - I like the conductor idea. I do talk a lot with my hands, but to get the day started that sounds good!

Wow---you didn't even WANT one---that is a gigantuan step on The Path. Brava my friend, Brava. And magical 3 times: Brava!.....Heeding comments about joint stress---as you go along, open yourself to altenating types of exercise so the stresses spred themselves around. For instance, in the beginning, it was so hard, I knew I had to peg some of the exercise to something that is totally, thoughtlessly a regular part of my routine, so I developed a Bathroom Workout that I do after brushing my teeth. Picture an orchestra conductor---folks have studied their incredible longevity and it has to do with all that waving your arms around which is really, really good for heart health. So my 10 minute first warm-up exercise in the bathroom is mostly focused around lots of arm and torso work......be well!.....

hi erin,
i started walking on a treadmill last fall. wow, does it help. i had to slow down a bit because it was causing problems with my hips and knees. i have added a little bit of dancing before the walking to get me going and warmed up. i am even having an easier time shoveling snow. shhh don't tell. i tell everyone how much i hate the cold and snow but i am actually enjoying shoveling.
i never started smoking but i have family who have quit and some who are trying to quit and i see how hard it is to do. kudo's to you. you must be very proud of yourself.

Good for you, but I do urge you to take it easy to start with. I know not everyone is the same, but I started just like you and after a month I was in a lot of pain from my knees and hips.

Congrats on the quitting smoking, have you started feel like you can breathe easier yet? And the damn money we save now, holy cow.
