I take about 40u of insulin a day (at least). I'm on the pump and I want to drastically (over a period of time), take less insulin. Any opinions, ideas, comments, concerns on what to do, what to eat, how to go about doing this? I want to lose weight and, less insulin = more weight loss !

I take like 41 units a day. 10 Lantus am and PM then 21 short acting.

- I am 180lbs - 49 yo male.

I am off the pump. I did it for a year and gained weight with same a1c's 6.0 average.

Take less - gradually go down and test. 1 unit a day less at meals. Less Carbs. Just take it down slowly.
Good luck and have a Dr. monitor your progress.

Let me know how you do! Good Luck!

Eat fewer carbs. That helps with weight loss along with the weight loss benefits of taking less insulin. Be sure to eat enough protein & fat so you won't be hungry. Tons of info here & on the web about low carb eating.

Exercise, especially using weights. Building muscle mass greatly improves insulin sensitivity resulting in reduced doses.

Here's a protein calculator from Jenny's site. It calculates how much protein a person needs based on age, desired weight, gender & activity level.
