Teaching your Dog scent Discrimination

Scent discrimination is a useful tool for Diabetes , You will be teaching your dog to use his nose to find a object, you have touched from among several that you have not touched. Your dog must use his scenting abillities (something that comes naturally to most dogs)

You need six socks, warsh and dry them. When they are dry, Use tongs to put five of them in a plastic bag close the bag . The sixth sock will be the one you touch when your have your high.s or lows. touch the sixth sock on a regular bassis when ever your blood sugar is to high or to low. Rub the sock between your hands and rub the sock on your forehead so it has a good dose of your scent of you when you have high,s or lows.

1.) with the scented sock play tug - of - war. Toss it a few times and ask your dog vto retrieve it. Make the sock fun.

2) Have your dog set. Tell him to stay. Now using the tongs take one of the unscented socks and place it on the ground.

3) Place the scented sock on the ground next to the unscented sock.

4) Tell Fido find mine. If he hesitates ( Perhaps looking at the unscented sock) use your left hand to urge him toward the scented sock.

5) Over se eral training sessions, Very the position of the sock with the scent. When your dog willgo out to the sock sniff them both and choose the correct one you are ready to move on.

Add one new unscented sock at a time adding another when the dog is doing well and continuing to choose the correct sock.

Eventually you should be able to have five unscented socks on the ground with one scented sock . give your dog a treet and lots of love when he picks the right sock. this worked for me and i am helping other people with great success.
