Teen diabetes revalation
So some of you have probably heard me talk of Jacob and his insecurity about his diabetes. He decided to have two friends over today. He just started a new high school this year so new faces and very few know about his diabetes. He was really nervous about having friends up and sharing his news. So I bring down brownies, drinks and Jacobs PDM and tester. He says I got this mom. So like any mom I hang on the stairs to eavesdrop! Jacob very calmly says, guys I am not sure you know but I have diabetes. One of his friends goes type 1 or type 7, obviously trying to lighten the mood. I didnt catch all of the conversation but one must of asked how he got it and Jacob said something about being swedish and ( no offense those with type 2) that fat people get type 2! the other boy says most of the older people in his family have type 2, so did he just call all of his new friends family fat! He must of showed them his omnipod and tested, I heard the beeps. He said it wasnt contagious as I heard the mention of blood and they went on to killing in black ops or what ever it was that they were playing. I would call it a major victory and tonight I will have to stifle a told you so moment. all is well!

thanks so much, i am very proud and can't wait to tell him so when his friends go home, they both seem like good kids so i am pleased. i often wonder if diabetes has made him more mature, he has always been responsible and cautious even before his diag. so his personality is that that would be suitable for a successful type 1 but just knowing he really has to be responsible or else has made him grow. but it has not and never will take the joy from his soul!

It's great that Jacob can share his diabetes with others. Having friends who know about it can be a life saver and they can also help out when he's having a bad D-day. I knew a couple of kids who were diabetic at my school, but they never told anyone. The only way I knew was because we saw each other filling out the health room paperwork. It's a step in the right direction though, because we have to learn how to let others know. Most people aren't trying to be rude or anything and usually respond with curiosity.

brianna that is the exact way i have been putting it to him, most will respond with curiosity and then really forget about it as we all know he and everyone is sooooooo much more than their diabetes! i got you on the dont always have to be responsible AR, lots of pizza last night with friends high bs this morning but at least we know why!
