Yeah, I know; been a while again.
Always plenty on my plate; nothing new.
Stephen has been deployed for two months now. I miss him dearly. Kandahar has been a rougher assignment here at home than any of his other deployments. Maybe, because the kids are older... yet some are young and really just now beginning to ask questions that I'm used to.
I finally broke down and took the Tricare Ins... went and saw a Dr. I told him I had Humalog at home and used it occasionally. I told him I'd like some Lantus (it was the first long lasting insulin that came to mind.) He gave me script for it! LOL! Now to learn how to use it. He only told me to test once or twice a day to make sure I didn't go to low with the combination. I've got hill to climb. I've slid back to totally "normal" eating. My A1C was 7.9
Oh by the way... I read on the paper that I should not use the same needle for the Lantus and the Humalog.

Why?
Can I do it anyway? If not....Darn that is gonna cost more!

I woke up this morning at 8:20 am with a number of 144! I took 2 units just to see what it would do last night. WOW!
I could not remember what to "properly" eat for breakfast this morning. So, I totally messed up. 3/4 cup of cherrios with whole milk! Nothing else and my number stunk at 2:00 this afternoon. 203!
sigh.. .

REMIND me please?

What is for breakfast, lunch and dinner? with 6 kids in the house and one male teen amongst the bunch that eats like a HORSE! Our budget of trying to pay down the bills means I've brought alot of "white food into the house" ie mac&cheese, rice, pancakes, waffles, cereal, potatoes, hamburger helpers, etc. Gotta fill the kids bellies and pay the bills.

Ok ready to listen if you'll fill in some answers to the questions up there. I'll work on it with the budget the best I can.

I do well with old fashioned oatmeal for breakfast and low carb, whole grain toast with PB for lunch. Both are inexpensive and filling. :)

Hey Meadowlark...glad to see you again. Eggs....eat eggs. They're cheap, healthful, and won't raise blood sugar. Eat them for breakfast. Feed them to your kids for dinner. Good luck to you. Tell your husband "Thanks."

Meadowlark----Hooray---I've missed you. I'm in Minnesota right now with very ill Mom, my garden was destroyed by a freak windstorm that took out the whole top half of our ancient willow and a sewer main broke and filled the basement with raw sewage.....Your sweetie's in profound "harm's way", your kids need you muchly and the budget's blown. Well, maybe we need to reconnect with the old "Depressive Ladies Do Lunch" spot. Anyway, I'm soo glad to hear from you again and I hope you won't stay away so long again.....Judith

Meadowlark-

Hello! My husband is currently overseas. I have Tricare and I love it. I agree with Sarah and Kristin, you should only use the same pen with one type of insulin. If you ever need someone to talk to other than kids. let me know.

Just like Sarah said, you should NOT mix Lantus with any other insulin, but you CAN reuse syringes (as long as you are the only one that is using them!).

I could use the same syringe for my humalog for 2-3 weeks. I was just really careful about putting the cap back on without bending the end of the syringe.

Hope that you will have good results with the Lantus!

Do you have bulk shopping near you? You can still save money and have all those things but with whole wheat or whole grain instead of white, or at least for your meals.

Unlike some insulins that can be mixed, Lantus can't be mixed with anything - you can potentially change the action of the insulin if you use the same needle/syringe. I use pens and I reuse needles all the time, but only with the same insulin. I normally use the same pen tip all day long with my Novolog, and I will re-use the Lantus tip for a few days.

my b/f is in boot camp right now , i can't wait to have tricare again in my life. Any insurance is good. You'll have to ask your doc more questions about lantus, or look on the internet. I take it once a day and i take humalog with my meals...
