I wish I could be rich and famous and "ween myself off of insulin" like Halle Berry did. Misdiagnosed or not, she's portraying an incorrect image of T1 diabetes.

Halle Berry has what is variously called Type 1b, Ketosis-prone Type 2, or Flatbush diabetes. It most commonly occurs in people of African descent, but also in Asians. They present in DKA, as Halle did, and they're typically not overweight, and after a period of decent control, they can, indeed, go off insulin. That doesn't mean they're not diabetic, just that it's neither classic Type 1 nor Type 2. No one knows exactly what goes wrong, but they remain prone to DKA if they get sick, or they eat too many carbs, and their BGs go too high. Whether you like Halle or not, don't blame HER for the fact that her ignorant doctors TOLD her she was Type 1 -- most docs are unaware of her type of diabetes. Of the various things she's said over the years, she has told the truth as far as she knew it. If you want to know more about this type of diabetes, google Michael Barker -- he runs a page called Ketosis-Prone Type 2. And he knows what he's talking about. And good for Halle for supporting JDRF, EVEN if she doesn't have classic Type 1.
