Hello! How Do You Do, and....HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you Gary.... Best Wishes NOW....and on the next 365 days (it's a leap year)!
How's it all going? Do you have any questions or comments?
Hi Gary, here is a website that I would recommend for good information about diabetes: Blood Sugar 101. Jenny, the author, also has a book out by the same name and is a member of our community. She offers very sound and well-researched advice that is certainly not the convential advice that leads so many people with diabetes to bad control!
I was also very proactive after my diagnosis 6 years ago. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 21 and my body no longer produces any insulin. If you have any questions about type 1, feel free to ask!!!
My dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started eating low carb right away (he already ate pretty low carb and healthily before his diagnosis -- so it wasn't a big change). He went to the dietician and she tried to convince him that he needed to eat MORE carbs now that he was a diabetic. He believed her and tried it for a week and saw his blood sugars SOAR. So I talked him into going BACK to his healthy diet and reducing carbs a lot. He pays attention to the glycemic index of foods as well and that has helped him a lot at preventing post meal highs. For me, I have found that the glycemic index doesn't help me much for blood sugar management, but general foods that are lower on the glycemic index are also healthier for anyone!
Gary, welcome to FLAUSA. Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. You'll find tudiabetes to be a great source of information. Be sure to log onto FLAUSA and let us know about the things to do in Miami.
