Hi David,

This is the very first "social networking" website I've ever joined. I'm not yet comfortable putting personal information out in public even though I'm sure that everyone on a site like this is a great person and a potential friend.

I have a couple of questions in relation to one of your posts that I'd really like to ask you. Would you be willing to "friend" me? I promise not to be a pest!

Thank you in advance,

Hey David- I am trying to get on here more. I've been really sick this past year dealing with gastroparesis- long story, no fun- and was not really very motivated. Now that I am dealing with the symptoms of it better, and getting that under control, I will probably be on here a lot more! I am psyched that there is a group on here for vegetarians! I am vegan/ raw-foodist-wanna-be. I don't know where on my profile it says I am Type 1.5-I used to call myself that, but since learning more about it, I don't think I qualify.

It is weird because I am classified as Type 1 for insurance purposes. For some reason, my doctors occasional refer to me as Type 1.5- perhaps because I was diagnosed as an adult? The weird thing is that when I was diagnosed, I was in DKA, and my c-peptides were 0.2. Now they are 0! From what I understand most people with 1.5 have usually years and years where they are on oral meds and managing with diet and exercise- I never had that. I went from totally normal to having almost no insulin production over a period of 4-5 months where I had "symptoms," but never made it to the docs.

Anyway, there's my little "Am I T1.5?" story for you..... it's interested you brought up your friend who's 1.5 and grew up in Brick, because I was reading about environmental toxins contributing to the rise in autoimmune diabetes- both Type 1 and Type 1.5 are autoimmune diseases- and Jersey in general is one of the most polluted states in the nation. The book I was reading was called Diabetes Rising by Dan Hurley. Really interesting stuff, because when most people talk about the "Diabetes Epidemic" they are talking about type 2 because there are so many of them- Type 1 and 1.5 only make up 5-15% of diabetics (depending on whose statistics you are looking at), but the crazy thing is that Type 1 and 1.5 are rising just as fast as Type 2!! I don't think it's a coincidence at all! Sorry for the long comment!

I was diagnosed in 2004 too - after 10 years of symptoms which doctors failed to pick up on!!! Looking back I had all the symptoms of frequent keto attacks! They said it was Type 2 (because of my age) but in fact it was Type 1!
