Jennifer, first off I should say I am not a doctor nor is TuDiabetes a substitute for medical advice. Having said that, I would recommend checking out this LADA (type 1.5 diabetes) resource page that answers many of the questions you ask: http://www.tudiabetes.org/notes/LADA_Diabetes
you might be thinking of LADA, which is really type1 diagnosed as an adult. our founder Manny has this type. read this discussion about misdiagnosis here
oh good, yes, that sugar-free poetry book is pretty powerful. I'm glad you're trying to learn about everything. I've come close to DKA a couple of times, and it feels really bad. lots of members here got dx'd because they went into DKA and they universally report feeling horrible.
DKA is very serious. You can die. We have had at least one member, a young lady like yourself, die from DKA since I've been a member here. I will send you the video Manny made about her death and how it shook us to the core. If you've been experiencing high blood sugars and have high ketones, feel nauseated, are throwing up, have heart palpitations, these are all symptoms of DKA, you need to go to the ER right away.
So true, right?!! My students are older...but still, don't want to frighten them, especially the younger levels. Nor do I want "stories" to go home!! If you know what I mean.
That's exactly what I do...giving them an activity/assignment they can work on by themselves...I do a lot of reading/conversations with my classes...and a low often causes me to lose the flow of what I'm reading/saying, and my hands shake. When we're in a reading circle (everyone taking a turn)...I would surrender my turn to a child who is a very capable reader, 'till I felt "normal" again! So far it has always worked out.
Have ever had lows in your classroom? What level do you teach?
I teach French to grades 1 to 4 and a component of English to gr. 4 and 5.
Be well....linda
