Maybe since your son is low carb, raw diet..the docs can adjust the insulin ratios if he is going too low. Mine is super busy with sports and exercising and has huge amounts of carbs per meal and snacks right now....it is so hard to learn what works and what sends them sky high or down low. It is kinda like a trial and /error thing in the beginning . We leaned that even at a big low PB and J on low fat bread and low carb jelly still makes him wicked high....he missed it so thought why not? Guess we will save it for a snack/special occasion when you crave that taste. you can email me at craybas4@gmail.com ...we can talk about our similar situations~Alicia

Thank you for the birthday wishes!!! Very nice!!! My son is on 13 Lantus and 3 Novolog in the am. He is on 7 Lantus and 3 Novolog in the pm. They just changed his dose last night, he was BSL of 33 at bedtime. I hit the comment back and it will not let me add comment... I don't know why? I apologize. I thank you for your help and information. Best Wishes, Annora

oh, Annora, you might want to check out Gerri - here - she was voted our best coach for good eating recently - she has very good low carb recipes and she eats a lot of vegetables and very very few processed foods. She knows a lot about nutrition and diabetes, and we just love her!

also, we have many teens here if your son might like to join. There is a dedicated group of volunteers who monitor the site to make sure it's PG13 and safe for all of us. He might enjoy making friends with others his age that understand completely what he's going through.

Annora, I happened to see your comment only because I read the RSS feed - otherwise I would not know that you had accidentally left your comment meant for me on your own page. This is a common little mistake many newbies make, so don't worry! If you want to respond to someone, and be sure that they got your message, you need to click on the words "comment back" - just under their comment to you.

that sounds like a very nice lunch, actually. I was thinking about what I said to you earlier, and I thought I did not respond well. Your son is taking a long acting insulin, and of course, he needs to take his shot, no matter what. What insulin(s) is he taking? I'm sure you are in regular, frequent contact with his doctor, diabetes educator, and registered dietician during these early days. Many things may need adjusting! Don't get discouraged, and write down as much as you can, so they can identify trends, etc.

Hi thank you. If there are repeats of this I apologize. I am just figuring out how to add my comments..not doing a very good job. Thank you for your reply. Yes we are carb counting. I will give you an example of his lunch today and any feedback I would love! He had two slices of toasted organic whole wheat bread, topped with diced tomatoes and raw garlic, olive oil and balsalmic vinegar. A side of cucumbers and radishes. Steamed brocolli and and 8 oz glass of organic reduced fat milk. All organic and as raw as possible. I have discussed with his doctor some of the items he eats but they seem to be more interested in the BSL. Thanks so much!

Annora, if your son's bg is 60, you should be giving him a 15 gram carb glucose tabs or juice. Are you carb counting? and, just wondering if your diabetes team is aware of the diet you have him on? I know the diagnosis has probably left you feeling overwhelmed right now. You have come to the right place for information and support. Leave a comment on my page if I can help you in any way. I've had type 1 for 42 years, and nothing has helped me more than TuDiabetes...

Thank you! My son who is 14 was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Friday, January 8, 2010. Right now I am researching and trying to find the best diet for him. I would like to do at least 60 to 70% raw and the rest whole foods. Any feedback to this would be appreciated. Thanks again. Best Wishes and Health to everyone!
