Home Treatments for Leg Pain in Cats

Leg pain can be distressing for cats, and it becomes more of a problem as your cat grows older... If you suspect that something serious is going on, then take your kitty to the veterinarian. However, if the leg pain is mild, you can do things at home to help relieve it.
Arnica Tablets or Cream
Give your kitty arnica tablets or cream. This homeopathic treatment is used on bruises, strains and other injuries in cats and humans. You can gently rub arnica cream on your cat's leg or give him arnica tablets. These products can be found in most health food stores. Follow dosage instructions carefully. Give your cat only one-third of the human dosage.
Dandelion Flower Remedy
Give your cat dandelion flowers. These herbs can be found at your local health food store. Mix a tsp. of dandelion flower with a small bowl of your cat's food. Dandelion flower is a gentle pain reliever for felines. You can also boil the flowers, let the solution cool and then give it to your kitty with a dropper. As long as your cat is not taking any medications, herbs should be safe in small doses. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your vet.
Apply Heat
Use a heating pad to soothe your kitty. Heat helps to bring down swelling and inflammation and numbs the pain. When your cat is resting comfortably in her bed or lying on the couch, you can put a heating pad on her leg. Wrap the heating pad in a blanket so that direct heat is not on your cat. This will help the pad to be warm but not scalding. Pet your cat as you put the heat pack on her leg. Do this several times a day to help her feel better.
Janet,
I have been learning about type 1 since 1959. I have it figured out now. The adverse reactions of hypo unaware, neuropathy, bladder problems (no feelings), numbness in my legs, and a host of other problems was due to the lack of C-peptides removed by all synthetic insulin manufacturers due to patents taken out by Eli Lilly in the early 80s. I have copies here if you want. I used synthetic non-human insulin from the mid 80s till 1991 when I found pork insulin was still available and have felt 100% since. The diabetic eye clinic here told me not to come back about 4 years ago and my kidney specialist also told me to get lost. I feel great and totally believe everyone around me will die before I do because my diet is low carb and high protein.
The insulin I use, the R starts in 2 hours and lasts 8, and the N starts in 8 and lasts 22 hours and I overlap them every 12 hours. This makes everything slow and comfortable. I always have an hour to take care of a low. I really love feeling hungry which I never did on non-human insulin, that was always a panic situation.

Janet,
I have only been on Lantus/Humalog for a few months. I am still trying to figure what works best for me. All my blood work and tests always come back good. HGa1C is 7.0. I do find that food seems to be the greatest factor in how the Lantus/Humalog works. Unlike most of the prevailing knowledge, bread seems to be the best carb for me. Pizza, Chinese, potatatoes are the worst. Sweet potatoes seem to work. I split my dose because I was going high in the am with 1 injection in am. When I split, my morning numbers seem to be better. Keep up the fight! Hank
Hi Janet, Nice to meet you. Today is not too cold here in Montreal, only about -5 degrees celcius and pretty snowflakes falling. It does get really freezing here though and can go down to -25 celcius for weeks at a time. I too have been feeling very cold this winter, which is unusual for me. It's most noticeable in my lower legs and feet. I do suffer from neuropathy and it is not the same feeling. Neuropathy is mostly in my toes, and feels like a burning sensation, especially at night, with discomfort with even light sheets touching my feet. My doc gave me amytryptaline, which is Elavil-an antidepressant, but when used in low doses it works on neuropathy. I started at 10mg and didn't get relief, but at 25mg it works like a charm for me. And no, I don't wear long underwear-usually just pantyhose with a skirt as I work in an office.
