If you're looking to get a basal insulin as a back up for if your pump breaks, and you don't want to pay for Lantus, NPH is definitely a cheaper alternative. In Canada it is sold as Humulin N and Novolin ge N.
If you really want all cheaper insulins, you could also pump regular with Humulin R or Novolin ge Toronto (R).
A1cs in people who use older insulins vs newer insulins are pretty much the same although the insulins are different.
