Managing diabetes is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life. I was diagnosed Type 1, 12 years ago and it doesn't get any easier. As far as carbs go, If you eat foods that have tons of fiber you should be pretty healthy. Luckily there are so many foods that include whole grains, we have quite a bit to choose from. Some suggestions: I add fruit and nuts to my yogurt; Thomas ' English Muffins Multi-Grain Light has 8g of fiber and only 25 carbs. I toast it and put eggs or peanut butter with banana on it. There are some great cereals, you just need to read the labels. My carb count is 1unit of insulin for every 10 carbs. My doctor suggests 60 carbs at each meal and exercise. I test at least 5-7 times a day depending on my work out schedule. I try to eat 5 fruits & vegetables a day (not always easy) and lean protein. I know it is overwhelming. Don't get down on yourself, everyone has good and bad days and we learn from them and move on. The diabetic websites have a lot of info on them.

So Gary, you think you might have been misdiagnosed? You might be LADA. Our founder Manny is too, and there are many smart people here who can tell you the tests to ask for. Here's a discussion on misdiagnosis

I saw where you said you aren't eating many carb, just fruit. fruit is loaded with carbs, for me, it shoots my bg up just like eating a candy bar. I'm not a strict low carber here, I try to keep it no more than 50 or so grams a day. when I started low carb, I was shocked at how many foods I'd previously though of as "free" had a fair amount, such as tomatoes and onions.

I have an insulin pump, and it only uses Humalog. I have it programmed to give me certain amounts in very small doses every three minutes throughout the day, and then for meals I bolus extra depending on the carb count. for breakfast and lunch, I take an extra unit for every 9 grams of carbs, and for dinner 1 unit for every 15 grams. I got a lot of help here at TuDiabetes three years ago and also saw a great CDE who helped me find the right ratios. my a1c has been in the 6s ever since. not to say that I don't have my days where we're riding the roller coaster through 200-land.
