Denise L. Faustman, MD, PhD, is Director of the Immunobiology Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has worked in the field of autoimmunity for nearly two decades. In 2001, the Faustman Lab reversed type 1 diabetes in mice with end-stage disease, a project that is now in human clinical trials. Imagine that: a possible type 1 cure with a cheap, generic, already existing drug!!

Great interview, Manny. It makes me want to try buying some BCG and experiment on myself ;-)

Thanks so much for doing this!
Is there any intent to watch for changes in other auto-immune diseases during the phase 2 trial? For example, will thyroid hormone levels be tested in people with type 1 diabetes who also have hypo-thyroid disease?

Wow! Thank you so much for this, Manny! Is Dr. Faustman type 1 herself? I used to work in an immunology lab. I wonder how BCG specifically targets only the "bad" T-cells? How dearly I wish I were rich... i would so donate IT ALL to this great woman.
