#MasterLab 2016 – AADE and the Diabetes Advocates

Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE, BC-ADM has been a dietitian and diabetes educator for nearly forty years. She currently operates a consulting practice, Hope Warshaw Associates, LLC, in Northern Virginia.

Her work today spans from corporate consulting to freelance writing and individual diabetes education and pump training. Hope has authored numerous consumer focused books published by American Diabetes Association including Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy and Eat Out Eat Well – The Guide to Eating Healthy in Any Restaurant. She’s the contributing editor for Diabetic Living magazine and writes the Nutrition Q&A column in The Washington Post.

Warshaw was an early adopter of social media and through this vehicle she’s been engaging with the Diabetes Online Community since 2010. She’s been an avid promoter of its value to people with diabetes and healthcare providers in the ensuing years. During 2016 Warshaw is serving as President of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Kurt Anderson is the Director of Federal and State Advocacy at AADE. He has close to 20 years of experience in legislative and government affairs.

Before working at AADE, Kurt was assistant legislative chief of staff for former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. Working for Governor Quinn, Kurt played a key role in Illinois’ implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He also guided and managed highly effective lobbying programs for the Department of Human Services, Department of Health Care and Family Services, Depart of Again, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Insurance and Department of Public Health, and the Health Facilities and Services Review Board, among other agencies.

Kurt also served as the director of intergovernmental affairs with the Service Employees International Union, Illinois Council. There he created and administered the union’s grass-roots oriented legislative and PAC program, directed lobbying assignments and trained local members on the legislative and political process. He also co-created and guided the long-term legislative agenda and briefed leaders on all pending initiatives.

MasterLab 2016 took place on July 6th in Orlando, Florida. We had a packed house. There were over 115 advocates from more than 28 states and 8 countries.
