My tips:
1. use your sense of humor every chance you get. It's a downer (as I'm sure you've noticed), and one of the best ways to fight that is to actively look for things about it that are funny.
2. Read The Book of Better, by Chuck Eichten. It's the only diabetes-related book I've found that is informative and totally hilarious.
3. Never ever ever leave your lovely new apartment without blood testing equipment, a source of insulin and a tube of glucotabs.
4. exercise a lot.
