TuDiabetes Live Interview: Dr. Luca Inverardi, of DRI, discusses recent news of BioHUB Mini Organ

Because of technical issues, this chat was abruptly cut short. Sorry for this. We guarantee that Dr. Inveradi said "thank you" and "goodbye."

Dr. Inverardi joined us to discuss a recent announcement by Diabetes Research Institute regarding their BioHUB mini organ to restore insulin production in people with type 1 diabetes. The announcement of this news begins "Scientists from the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami are taking a quantum leap toward a biological cure for diabetes by unveiling the DRI BioHub, a bioengineered "mini organ" that contains lifesaving insulin-producing cells that can sense blood sugar and release the precise amount of insulin needed in real time."

Luca Inverardi, M.D., is Research Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In addition, he serves as Deputy Director of Translational Research at the Diabetes Research Institute.

Much of Dr. Inverardi's research interests lie in developing ways to make biological replacement of insulin-producing tissue reproducibly successful in a large cohort of patients.

This area of investigation focuses on a broad range of basic research experiments in the areas of transplant immunology, tolerance induction and cytoprotection, as well as diabetes stem cell research and immunogenetic studies to prevent diabetes.

His division is comprised of multi-disciplinary scientists working in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, pancreatic stem cell development, pathology and immunogenetics.
